Design and construction of a new Household Waste Recycling Centre in Old Swan, Liverpool.

The scope of works included site renovation, clearance and levelling, installation of a SW and FW drainage system with storm water attenuation tanks, construction of bitmac and reinforced concrete hardstandings and a reinforced concrete retaining wall to separate the upper and lower site levels, installation of permanent site welfare facilities, new meet/greet and cycle shelters and ablution block, construction of a new 30m x 10m WEEE (Waste Electronic, Electrical Enclosure) building with the inclusion of a re-use shop section, together with the installation of a 64m x 10m canopy overhanging the skip bays and traffic management control systems.

The new HWRC has the capacity to receive up to 15,000 tonnes of householders’ waste and recyclable materials each year.

The cut and fill design optimised as much of the site won materials as possible. 1084m3 of crushed stone and 767m3 of MOT was generated by site clearance and 100% of these materials were reused on the site.

100% FSC timber was used for the site hoardings and at the end of its useful life, over 95% of the HWRC infrastructure can be dismantled then reused or recycled.

This project was awarded a CEEQUAL Excellent (Whole Team) Award.
